The pay-per-lead problem

Why providers pad their quotes on Thumbtack

On Thumbtack, providers pay $3–$30 per lead : even if you don't hire them. That cost has to go somewhere, so it's baked into every quote they send. Multiply by the 5 providers Thumbtack matches you with, and you're looking at $15–$150 of lead-cost overhead on a single job.

Khench providers pay only 12% when they win a job. No per-lead charge. No subscription. So quotes stay tight and compete on actual price, not on how much overhead the provider has to recover.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Thumbtack work in Canada?

Thumbtack is a US-only service. Canadian customers can sometimes view profiles but cannot book or get matched with local providers. Khench is purpose-built for Canada and accepts job posts in all 13 provinces and territories.

What is the Canadian equivalent of Thumbtack?

Khench is a reverse-auction marketplace for local services in Canada. Both platforms connect customers with providers, but the mechanics differ. Thumbtack matches you with 5 providers who pay for the lead, while Khench has providers compete with live bids on a job you post.

How does Khench compare to Thumbtack?

Thumbtack charges providers for each lead, which gets baked into your final price. Khench charges providers only when they win a job (12% commission): leading to lower quotes. Khench is also free for customers; Thumbtack premium tiers cost money.

Why are Khench prices typically lower?

Three reasons: (1) providers compete in real time, so they price to win the job; (2) no per-lead fees to bake into a quote; (3) the job is scoped to your city, so you are not paying for travel from somewhere else.

What services does Khench cover that Thumbtack doesn't in Canada?

Everything: Thumbtack doesn't cover Canada at all. Khench supports snow removal, towing & roadside, lawn care, auto repair, home cleaning, and other custom jobs across all of Canada.
